Mount Isa Water Board secures supply

Mount Isa Water Board will invest $4 million to install two new custom-built clean water tanks at the Mount Isa Terminal Reservoir site, helping to secure the town’s water supply for the next 50 years.

The original tanks are over 60 years old, built in 1958 to supply Mount Isa Mines. In recent years, the cost to maintain the tanks, ensuring clean drinking water for the town, has continued to escalate.
The new tanks are more than 24 metres in diameter and as tall as a three-storey building. Once complete, they will store a total of 8 million litres of fresh drinking water ready to be pumped to Mount Isa residents.

Mount Isa Water Board Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Farrelly said, “Our water supply infrastructure is vital to the Mount Isa community.

“Every day, we treat and supply approximately 18 million litres of clean drinking water to Council for local residents, and approximately 30 million litres of semi-treated water for our large industrial customers, MIM and Incitec Pivot.

“We take a long-term view and invest in our water assets to ensure they continue to meet current and future need for Mount Isa’s safe and reliable water supply,” he said.

The installation is expected to be completed by the middle of 2020.
